Electromagnetics: Basics and Geotechnical Applications

About Course

Electromagnetic inductive techniques are used to map subsurface features associated with changes in ground conductivity. This module covers the EM-31 system, including data acquisition, processing, and interpretation techniques. The application of the EM-31 system in addressing geological and geotechnical problems is also discussed.
Period:
• Four weeks (condensed module)
• Eight weeks (full module)
Contents:
• Two-Coil continuous wave systems

o System descriptions
o Response functions
o In-phase and out-of-phase components
o Effects of coil separation

• Instrumentation
• Data acquisition

o Ground conductivity measurement
o Surveys on slopes

• Field acquisition of EM-31 data (Geonics EM-31system)
• Data processing
• Data interpretation
• Applications and case studies
Participants will develop field and software-oriented skills on how to:
• Conduct conductivity surveys using EM-31 system.
• Process and visualize EM-31 data.
• Interpret EM-31 in-phase and out-of-phase data.
• Use EM-31 surveys to address different geological and geotechnical problems.
